Wallpaper Roll Calculator with Pattern Repeat

Calculate how many standard wallpaper rolls you need, allowing for the pattern repeat and a spare roll.

Project Inputs UK Metric
Wallpaper Rolls Needed
Rolls Needed (inc. 1 spare)
7 rolls
Calculated using 10.05m standard rolls with 100mm trimming allowance plus full pattern repeat per strip.
Strips (drops) Needed
16 drops
Drops per 10.05m Roll
3 drops
Rolls Needed (inc. 1 spare)
7 rolls
  • Buy all rolls from the same batch number so the colour matches.
  • Each drop allows 100mm for trimming plus the pattern repeat.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total width of the walls to paper and the wall height.
  2. Enter the pattern repeat in centimetres from the roll label (0 for plain papers).
  3. Enter the roll width, usually 53cm in the UK.

Measuring and Common Mistakes

Measure the horizontal width of each wall and measure vertical height from the skirting board up to the ceiling or picture rail. Check the wallpaper roll label for exact specifications; standard UK wallpaper rolls measure 53 cm wide by 10.05 metres in length. Identify the pattern repeat length in centimetres and whether the wallpaper uses a straight match, random match, or offset drop match.

Common mistakes when ordering wallpaper rolls include:

  • Ignoring the pattern repeat dimension; large 53 cm or 64 cm pattern motifs can waste up to half a metre of paper per vertical drop to align horizontal design elements.
  • Deducting complete door and window openings; doing so leaves no allowance for the short offcut drops needed above lintels and below window sills.
  • Mixing batch or run numbers when purchasing rolls, leading to noticeable variations in background ink tones and sheen across adjacent wall drops.

This calculation applies to standard rectangular rooms with flat walls. It is not accurate for sloping attic ceilings, complex curved staircases, or tall open galleried landings where drop heights vary continuously. For expensive feature wallpapers, flock designs, or intricate panoramic murals, purchase at least one extra reserve roll and review manufacturer hanging instructions before cutting your first drop.

Planning & Construction Reference

How the estimate works

Each drop is the wall height plus one pattern repeat plus 100mm for trimming. Drops per roll = 10.05m ÷ drop length, rounded down. Drops needed = wall width ÷ roll width, rounded up. Rolls = drops needed ÷ drops per roll, rounded up, plus one spare.

Worked example (the default inputs)

8m of wall, 2.4m high, with a 32cm repeat on 53cm rolls: each drop is 2.82m, so 3 drops per roll; 16 drops are needed, giving 7 rolls including a spare.

Tips

  • Check every roll has the same batch number before you start.
  • Start next to a window or in a corner and use a plumb line for the first drop.
  • Line poor walls with lining paper first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a standard roll?

Most UK rolls are 10.05m long and 53cm wide. Wide rolls (around 70cm or more) are common for paste-the-wall papers.

Why does pattern repeat matter?

Each drop must start at the same point in the pattern, so you lose up to one repeat per drop. Large repeats can cut the drops per roll from 4 to 3.

Should I deduct windows?

Usually not for normal-sized windows. The offcuts rarely match, and the spare roll covers mistakes.
